What is Pongal?
Pongal is Tamil Nadu's grand four-day harvest festival celebrated from January 14-17. The name 'Pongal' means 'to boil over' and refers to the traditional dish of rice boiled in milk until it overflows, symbolizing abundance and prosperity.
The four days are Bhogi Pongal (cleaning), Thai Pongal (Sun worship), Mattu Pongal (cattle worship), and Kaanum Pongal (family outings). Beautiful kolam patterns are drawn in front of homes, and sugarcane decorations are everywhere.
